Billy Wagner, assigned to the disabled list because of a strained left forearm, did not respond as well as he and the club had hoped to a 20-pitch session on Saturday. Afterwards, Wagner said, "I wouldn't say that I'm ready." Wagner, 37, experienced stiffness in his left elbow, and the decision was made to talk to the club's doctors and scrap the plan to have him activated Monday. Wagner either will throw in simulated conditions or in a Minor League game Monday or be examined again. His extended absence will prompt the Mets to revisit the possibility of moving John Maine from the rotation to the closer's role.
