Boston's Jon Lester and Milwaukee's C.C. Sabathia, pair of lefty hurlers, were named the Pitchers of the Month for July on Monday. The 24-year-old Lester went 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA and 28 strikeouts in July. The 24-year-old pitched a total of 30.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 31 hits and six walks for the month. On July 3rd he pitched a complete-game shutout against the New York Yankees in his first game ever at Yankee Stadium, giving up five hits and fanning eight. The gem snapped a five-game Boston losing streak and marked the first shutout by a Red Sox left-hander at Yankee Stadium since Roger Moret did so on July 4, 1973. He has not taken a loss at Fenway Park since April 9th. Sabathia, who was acquired from the Cleveland Indians on July 7th, won his first four starts as a Brewer, allowing eight earned runs, 29 hits and 10 walks with 34 strikeouts over 39.2 innings. The 28-year-old southpaw won his Milwaukee debut on July 8th vs. Colorado, working 6.0 innings, permitting two earned runs on five hits, while striking out five. Sabathia, a native of Vallejo, California, threw three consecutive complete games on July 13th vs. Cincinnati, July 18th at San Francisco and July 23rd at St. Louis. On July 13th, Sabathia hit his second home run of the season and third of his career, and became the first pitcher to hit home runs in both leagues in one season since Earl Wilson did it in 1970 for Detroit and San Diego. On July 18th, Sabathia gave up one run on four hits and struck out 10. On July 23rd, the reigning A.L. Cy Young winner tossed a shutout, allowing three hits and striking out seven. CC, whose 166 total strikeouts this year currently rank second in Major League Baseball, became the first Brewers pitcher to toss at least three consecutive complete games since Cal Eldred went the distance in four straight in 1994.
