General manager Ken Williams acknowledged Saturday it was a mistake not to attempt to re-sign Paul Konerko in spring training but said retaining the All-Star first baseman remains the White Sox's No. 1 priority once the season ends. "I explained to Paul [in spring training] this was not about our desire not to have him as part of our organization for a long, long time," Williams said. "This was about trying to determine what we did in the off-season was heading toward the right path. There would be a time for us to talk, but I didn't want him to think that because we weren't going to talk contract that it was somehow indicative of our feelings toward him. "Obviously it's a little more difficult to get something done. But if there's a desire on both parts to get something done, then I'm more optimistic than not." Konerko hit at least 40 homers and drove in at least 100 runs for the second consecutive season. His first-inning homer Saturday was his fourth of the postseason.
