Mike Pelfrey of the Mets and Matt Joyce of the Tigers were named the MLB Players of the Week in their respective leagues on Monday. Pelfrey went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 15.0 innings without allowing a walk. The 24-year-old right-hander was tied for second in the National League in innings pitched. The Wichita State product has allowed just one run over his last three starts (22.0 innings) and has not surrendered a walk in his last two starts, tossing 16.0 consecutive scoreless innings. On Sunday against the Rockies, Pelfrey hurled 8.0 shutout innings with five strikeouts leading the Mets to their ninth straight victory. Pelfrey, who is now 8-4 with a 3.64 ERA on the season, has won six consecutive starts dating back to June 16th at Anaheim. This is the first career weekly award honors for Mike. Last week, Joyce hit .409 (9-22) with four doubles, four home runs, and six RBI. The 24-year-old rookie posted a 1.136 slugging percentage along with a .409 on-base percentage. He was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored against Cleveland on July 9th. During a four-game series against Minnesota from July 10-13, Joyce was 6-for-17 with three home runs, four RBI and four runs scored. The Tampa, Florida native is hitting .266 with nine home runs and 18 RBI in 31 games with the Tigers. This marks the first career weekly award for Joyce.
