Rookie outfielder Brett Gardner singled home the winning run for the Yankees against the Red Sox on Sunday night in the tenth inning. New York jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Alex Rodriguez, but Boston broke through with three runs on Joba Chamberlain in the top of the fifth inning. The Yankees trimmed the lead to 3-2 with an RBI single by Derek Jeter in the sixth, but the Sox got a run back right away on a double by Kevin Cash that scored Julio Lugo. Robinson Cano answered quickly, though, as he tied the game up on a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh. Mariano Rivera entered the game in the ninth and pitched two solid innings for New York, earning the win in the process. He threw just 16 pitches in the two innings, striking out two batters and allowing one hit. Jonathan Papelbon entered in the bottom of the tenth for Boston, earning the loss as he allowed two hits and recorded just two outs. Cano singled to center to leadoff the inning, and Melky Cabrera used a sacrifice bunt to move Cano to second. Wilson Betemit recorded the second out as he struck out swinging, but the rookie Gardner came through with two outs to end the game. The game-winner was just the third Major League hit for Gardner, who had two base knocks in the game.
