In talks with Bryce Harper, the San Francisco Giants offered the outfielder a 12-year, $310 million deal.

The Giants were willing to go higher, but the increase would have had to be significant to go over $330 million because of state taxes in California.

Farhan Zaidi also was on board with the pursuit of Harper.

“First of all, Farhan was the leading advocate for Harper, not the other way around,” Giants CEO Larry Baer told The Athletic on Thursday night. “We wouldn’t have gone with it if he didn’t think it was a good baseball move. And we did believe this would have been a good baseball move.”
