The Boston Red Sox have designated Pablo Sandoval for assignment.
Sandoval signed a five-year, $95 million contract with the Red Sox after the 2014 season. Sandoval is owed $18 million each of the next two seasons.
Sandoval had an OPS of .622 in 99 at bats this season with the Red Sox. Sandoval was on the disabled list with a knee injury and then an inner ear infection this season.
Sandoval played in just three games with the Red Sox in 2016.
