Jose Valverde has prepared for the possibility of becoming a free agent by hiring Scott Boras as his agent.
The decision appears to indicate that Valverde will look for the best possible contract instead of accepting what the Tigers can offer to re-sign him.
The reliever tried to downplay that school of thought.
"People change agents all the time," he said.
Valverde is making $9 million this season after making $7 million in each of his first two seasons with the Tigers.
