by buster gunning During a recent stay in New York, I was swimming in the East River with my good friend Keith Hernandez when I came across some interesting news about the New York Yankees organization. In the midst of a season that has been, so far, very disappointing and un-Yankee like, owner George Steinbrenner is now considering his options lest his team revert back to the dim 80?s, a decade packed with Yankee futility. It seems that the eccentric owner is once again considering bringing back off-and-on manager Billy Martin in place of Richard Nixon look-alike Joe Torre. Martin, as may or may not remember, managed the team several times with stints in..1975, 1979, 1983, 1985 and 1988. When asked to validate these rumors Mr. Steinbrenner stated that it was not out of the realm of possibility and that he was indeed considering it. When asked in a recent IM conference if he thought he could get Billy Martin back or if Mr. Martin was even still alive, Mr. Steinbrenner became visibly upset. Steinbrenner: If I want Martin, I will get him back. Big Stein will not tolerate a losing or even an average season from his New York Yankees! Buster: I think he might be deceased. Steinbrenner: I will find a way to make it happen, when I put my mind on something I get it. Steinbrenner gets what he wants! I will also get Martin to sign a contract to not punch any marshmallow salesmen. Buster: Seems a bit rash doesn?t it Mr. Steinbrenner? I mean what is next, bringing back Don Mattingly to play first base? Steinbrenner: No, I will not go through that again, not until that hippie decides to shave his sideburns. So there you have it, when the chips are down Mr. George Steinbrenner gets to work. With him at the helm I have a feeling this Yankee team will not stay mediocre for long. The preceeding article is a piece of satirical fiction.
