In the biggest deal player wise to date this baseball season, the Cincinnati Reds sent outfielder Austin Kearns, shortstop Felipe Lopez, and right-handed reliever Ryan Wagner to the Washington Nationals for shortstop Royce Clayton, relievers Gary Majewski and Bill Bray, infielder Brendan Harris, and pitching prospect Daryl Thompson.
The 26-year old Kearns was hitting .274 with 16 home runs and 50 RBI in 87 games, while Lopez was hitting .268 with nine home runs and 30 RBI in 85 games, a year after winning the National League Silver Slugger award. Wagner on the other hand, was at Triple-A Louisville, where he had a 1-3 record with a 6.34 ERA.
Going to Cincinnati, the Reds will get Clayton, who is hitting .269 with no home runs and 29 RBI in 87 games of action, as well as Majewski, who pitched for Team USA in the WBC, who has recorded a mark of 3-2 this season with a 3.58 ERA. They also picked reliever Bill Bray, who has impressed many with his potential in his spot work this season, as well as Harris and Thompson, who were both currently in the minor leagues. Bray was ranked as the eighth best prospect in Washington?s system prior to this season.
Breaking Down the Deal:
It was rumored that general manager Jim Bowden was on the hot seat with his legal troubles, questionable moves, and new ownership, but with this move, he should be headed straight to the penthouse. Bowden trades away a fix-gap shortstop, a middle reliever that isn?t very valuable to a last-place team, a nice pitching prospect, and two other players for two bona fide everyday players and an interesting pitching prospect. This deal couldn?t have worked out better as the Nationals add some youth and offensive punch, which provides a security blanket in case they can?t bring back Alfonso Soriano this winter.
In Cincinnati, everything general manager Wayne Krivsky has touched has turned to gold in his short time with the Reds, but the luck has run out for him this time. The move clearly states that the Reds want to win now, but they aren?t even the best team in their division after this move and could very likely miss the playoffs and be out two good young players. Bullpen is a need and they got a nice reliever Majewski, but they gave up too much in the process to do it.
Overall Grade:
Washington Nationals: {A+} The Nationals can now boast one of the best young line-ups in baseball after this deal and don?t have to trade much in the process. Bowden has just earned himself a few more years in the nation?s capital with this trade.
Cincinnati Reds: {D-} The Reds are shooting for it all this year, but it will prove to be a foolish shot. They don?t have the talent to win the National League and this move won?t push them over that hump and after they fall, they will be two, good young position players short down the line.
