After being demoted on June 30th in favor of his younger brother Jered, it was only a matter of time before Jeff Weaver would be headed to his fifth team in the big leagues. That announcement came on Thursday as the Los Angeles Angeles shipped Weaver and about $2.5 million dollars to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league outfielder Terry Evans.
After signing a one-year deal this off-season for $8.3 million, Weaver went just 3-10 for the Angels with a 6.29 ERA. In Evans, a 25-year old minor league outfielder who was currently at Double-A Springfield, the Angels get a player who has a .310 average with 22 home runs during split duty at Class A and Double-A this season.
Breaking Down the Deal:
In St. Louis, it is a welcome addition for another healthy arm to keep the boat afloat until guys like Mark Mulder can come back. Weaver had his best success in the National League as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cardinals? pitching coach Dave Duncan is renowned for his work at reviving a pitcher?s career under the arches. The Cardinals are saying that Weaver will join the rotation after the All-Star break.
For the Angels, they were happy to unload Weaver on someone else, especially someone in the National League. The Angels have struggled to secure quality starting pitching, outside of Bartolo Colon, and the experiment with Jeff Weaver wasn?t going to get any better. They were able to get an average hitter out of the deal and get off the hook for some of the remaining number.
My Grade:
St. Louis Cardinals: {B+} The Cardinals had to give up almost nothing for a pitcher that has shown obvious talent through the years. Still, he is very similar to the types of pitchers they already have, which are good enough to win in the regular season, but not in October. Nice move by Walt Jocketty, but it won?t make a big difference come October.
Los Angeles Angels: {C-} This grade reflects another pitching flop for the Angels and the reality that they really didn?t get anything in return for their winter investment. A positive out of the deal is that he is out of the league, so he won?t come back and hurt them, but they still lost this deal.
