I laughed just as hard as you when I watched Manny walk off the field and through a door in the Green Monster last week. ?There goes Manny, razzing his loyal fans, again.?
This is the same guy, who after winning MVP of the World Series, was quick to say, ?I am done once my contract is up, I have accomplished all I set out to do.?
This is the same guy who has asked to be traded year after year.
The very same guy who begged to stay when he finally heard a realistic trade was being considered for A-Rod.
And yet, when he requests a trade citing privacy issues in Boston, everyone jumps. The point is simple; let the man be the prima donna he became the moment he inked that 8 year, $160,000,000 contract.
Now that I look back on it though, maybe Manny thought the Green Monster door would send him into another dimension, transporting him to a sandlot in the sky, with no cameras, and still a bag full of cash for his talents.
After the reports came out of ?Camp Manny? Monday night, the players, coaches, and fans were all confused. The media pounced hard, and President Lucchino fired back today by letting Manny?s people know that he should probably keep his bags unpacked. Manny is leading the league in RBI?s, has 28 home runs, and for those of you watching the games has maintained his same goofy demeanor.
I propose this question: Is Manny really this bored? He knows it is virtually impossible for a decent enough trade offer to come around for Theo to even mentally exercise the idea, not to mention the slim chance a team could even afford him, so why bother providing the distraction in the first place? Probably for the same reason he bounced out of left field to go take a leak: because the man can.
I think everyone from the top of the front office down to the old lady in the stands knows that Manny carries as much leverage as any player in the game today. His contract is gigantic, and his game is invaluable, so why don?t we all put this one to sleep and fuhget about it. If the Sox actually decided to put this bull-dung behind them and traded away their best offensive player for nothing, just to spite Manny, they would not only take themselves out of the running for ring 2 in 87 years, but surely it would take the fans at least, hmm (Sox fans?), 3 weeks to forgive them.
From the reaction of the players, dumbfounded at the thought that Manny was unhappy, and his offensive production, I think it is safe to say Ramirez isn?t actually losing any sleep over his current employment. That is the bottom line really, because if he was serious about this trade, and not just blowing the same old ?I am tired and need to make a scene? smoke, it really would bode poorly for the Sox and show up in his numbers. I say give the man a giant lollipop, a big balloon, a Cletus school uniform, and let him whine until the trade deadline passes?because the Sox need him.
