Return to MLB Prospect index Dellin Betances - RHP Dellin Betances Scouting Report - Dellin Betances was selected in the 8th round by the Yankees in the 2006 MLB Draft. He supposedly dropped because he would have likely gone to Vanderbilt had he been drafted by any team other than the Yankees. Moved his family to New Jersey with his seven-figure signing bonus. - A native of Brooklyn, Betances was born March 23rd, 1988 and is 6'8", 215 lbs. - Betances struck out 135 and walked 59 in 115.1 Single-A innings during the 2008 season. This was the first season in which he threw more than 25 innings after battling injuries. He had a 3.67 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Betances lowered his BB/PA rate under 10% in both July and August during the 2008 season. - His huge frame works both for and against him, but his delivery and mechanics and improved considerably. Betances throws in the mid 90's and has a very promising knuckle curve. He can hit the high 90's and as he adds strength, Betances should consistently have great velocity with his fastball. He also has a change-up that is improving, but a long ways away from being reliable. - Nicknamed Baby Unit due to his height. - Tommy John surgery appears to be an inevitability somewhere down the road.
