Frank Thomas, the 38 year old slugging DH is set to play for his third team in as many years. The Big Hurt signed a 2-year contract worth $18 million plus an option for a third year worth $10 million, with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. After 16 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Frank Thomas signed a minimum contract with the Oakland A?s last season and added over $2.5 million in incentives. Thomas had another comeback year and revitalized his career once again after two injury plagued seasons. He led the A?s with 39 homers and 114 RBIs and played a huge part in helping them get back into the playoffs after a two year drought, providing the A?s with the big bat they were lacking. Thomas is just 13 homers short of becoming just the 21st player to reach 500 career home runs. Frank Thomas is risky due to his injury problems but when healthy the Big Hurt is still one of the best power hitters in the game. At 2 years for $18 million it is worth it to give the potential Hall of Famer a chance because if he can stay healthy he will produce and be a strong force in the middle of the Blue Jays line-up. The Blue Jays lacked a consistent DH last year as it was more of a position by committee. Adding Thomas to a line-up that already contains some pop with Troy Glaus, Vernon Wells, and Lyle Overbay, along with other solid hitters, will allow them to challenge the Yankees and Red Sox for the AL East crown or a wild card spot. If everyone can stay healthy including their pitchers, most notably Roy Halladay and A.J. Burnett, the Toronto Blue Jays will be in for an exciting season, as 90 wins should well be in reach. My grade: B It would be higher but I cannot get too excited because he is 38 years old and has been healthy for only one of the last three years.
