Sometimes you require help from the unknown, and Saturday?s washout may have been the most opportunistic drenching of the season for the Yankees. Desperately needing a win following Randy Johnson?s feeble post-season display on Friday, this proud team may be on the brink of holiday. That?s certainly the way the boo-birds saw it. ?If I would have paid for a ticket to watch myself, I would have booed myself too,? Johnson later said. Maybe he should have gone into the stands to join in the catcalls. Throw in a few major hisses with the masses. ?They need to not forget that he was 6-0 down the stretch when we needed him to be big,? Jason Giambi groused. ?Sometimes they can forget real fast around here what got us here. If he hadn?t done what he did, we wouldn?t have ever been in a situation to be in the playoffs.? Yeah, well, what?s he done lately, huh? You think all us New Yawkers are that dumb? Five earned runs over 3 innings wasn?t scrawled across their tickets. And down 2-1, the next Angels? victory sends the Yankees into the winter in search of cold beer, stale chips, and their most comfortable lumpy sofa to view the remainder of the playoffs. The extra day will undoubtedly help to rest the bullpen, pressed into extended duty because of The Unit?s short and unspectacular stint. It also may help Shawn Chacon, who will start Sunday. ?Any time he?s had an extra day, he's pitched extremely well. I don't think it will hurt him,? said Yanks pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre of Chacon. Chacon is one of those guys who captured supreme rejuvenation by a change of scenery. Traded on July 28th from the Colorado launching pad, Shawn compiled a record of 7-3 and an ERA of 2.85 with New York. He was also 3-0 with an ERA of 0.40 in his last three starts. ?He?s been huge,? Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. ?I think the thing with Chacon is he?s not intimidated by anything.? Except playing for the Rockies obviously, where he was 1-7 and 4.09. Oh, that. The extra time off also means Johnson may get into a game out of the bullpen. Having thrown only 62 pitches to get lit up means he should be ready, willing and able when the phone rings. ?I think I could pitch today if I had to; anything is possible,? Johnson said Saturday. ?We have to take it one game at a time.? A very neat little strategy, since one is all they may have left. But there is certainly a precedent. Johnson came out of the pen in game 7 of the 2001 World Series to help Arizona beat New York. Of course, he was also 4 whole years younger. That?s about what, 28 in dog-years. ?I?m here, and if they need me, I'll do the best I can -- just like I do every time. I?ve never turned the ball down.? You go, big guy. Mike Mussina is in Anaheim, presumably taking it easy so he will be ready for a game five. No wild rides at Disneyland ? can?t take any chances. There was even some thought of the ?Moose? vaulting on a plane to rush back for Sunday?s game four. Joe Torre kiboshed that idea, and now it?s up to Shawn to even the series and keep muzzles on the second-guessers. ?We need to win one game,? Jeter sighed. Way to go, Derek.
