Somebody wake up the San Francisco Giants. They appear to be dozing through the imagined rivalry with their cross-bay foes. Not that there?s anything wrong with that ? not when you are 11 games behind and dropping like a stone anyway.
A 16-0 flogging of the Giants not only gave Oakland the three game sweep, but means they have now won 8 of the last 9, 11 of 14, and have posted a record of 16-8 in June. No one is too excited yet, but it sure beats losing.
Just don?t ask the Giants. They couldn?t tell you.
While it appears the A?s have turned their season around of sorts, the Giants have sunk into an even greater depth. The disparity in the number of runs scored was overshadowed by the disparity in the number of hits: 24-1.
That?s TWENTY-FOUR to one!!! How does that happen?
Maybe there was some sort of schedule snafu. Like the Salem Volcanoes of single-A somehow got routed to Oakland by accident and thought? what the heck, let?s try on these major league uniforms and give it a shot. Who would really know?
Of course, that doesn?t explain the 5-error fiasco on Saturday, unless the San Jose Giants were actually the first ones to pull the switch. What happens when the league finds out? Is this kind of stuff legal, and are the real Giants now playing in the minors?
And the most troubling question: Would anybody even notice if they were?
Three dropped fly balls. ?And in broad daylight,? said a thoroughly disgusted Felipe Alou.
Well, they have three outfielders, don?t they?
?I gotta say it's the worst,? he continued. ?I feel sick today. Bad sun? I read about the sun -- it's been one billion years in existence. It's the same sun when I played ... unless they changed suns.?
Good that he can laugh about it. Helps to have a sense of humor with this team.
Oakland manager Ken Macha can relate. ?You're hoping there's only one game a year like that. It's not a good feeling.?
After Sunday?s drubbing, Felipe now has felt two in a row. And counting.
Some credit can be grudgingly given to A?s starter Rich Harden. His popping fastball was enough to give the Giants their worst shutout loss since moving to San Francisco. And he had more than enough offensive support.
?Is the sun out today,? Felipe asked smiling, prior to the game. Little did he know that was to be his least concern. Doesn?t take long to turn a smile to a frown.
Every member of the A?s starting lineup had at least one hit, and the leader of the parade was Bobby Crosby with four. Five other guys had 3. They scored in each of the first 5 innings.
Pouring it on? Taking advantage of a hapless opponent?
Nick Swisher hit a pair of two-run homers, and Jason Kendall celebrated his 31st birthday with 3 hits, including 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. He ended the longest RBI drought of his career, which had reached twenty games.
?This isn't about me,? said the catcher. ?This is about we, and we're playing good baseball. It's a nice feeling.?
The Giants wouldn?t know about that.
