It's never too early. Everyone deserves a little adulation. And this is the time to give the love to those who have started out so well but who have no chance to finish this strong. In that spirit, I present the first annual ?Weekies.? MVP AL: Chris Shelton A .536 batting average coupled with a 1.888 OPS seals the award for Chris Shelton of the surprising Detroit Tigers. The Weekies look at team success just like the end of season awards, and Shelton is the biggest offensive threat on the 5-3 Tigers. Shelton has as many home runs as the Red Sox. NL: Brad Hawpe In much the same way the Tigers are surprising the American League, the Colorado Rockies are shocking the world leading the NL West, and Brad Hawpe is the biggest reason why. A team leading 9 RBIs, a .370 batting average, and stellar defense in right field. Hawpe has nearly hit for the cycle two games in a row. Cy Young AL: Mark Hendrickson The Weekies don't care if you have one start or a hundred starts: when your ERA is 0.00, you're the winner. Hendrickson gets the nod over fellow 0.00 ERA club member Joe Blanton because he tbrew a complete game. That 0.44 WHIP is pretty to look at as well. NL: Bronson Arroyo 2-0, 1.98 ERA, 11 strikeouts. But it's the bat that wins Arroyo the award. He has gone deep in both his starts (both against the Cubs and Glendon Rusch) and fits in nicely with Cincinnati's offensive powerhouse. Will he hit 30 home runs this season? Stay tuned. Rookie of the Year AL: Ian Kinsler As if the Texas Rangers needed more offense, Kinsler has bolted out of the gate with a .476 average in 21 ABs. Unfortunately, he is set to miss the next few weeks with a dislocated thumb, so let's get him an award, STAT! NL: Hanley Ramirez Florida isn't going to be winning much of anything this season, so a Weekie is in order for Ramirez, who has started strong at SS for the Marlins. A .440 batting average and 6 runs scored is a great beginning to what will surely be a terrible season in Miami. Manager of the Year AL: Eric Wedge The best team tends to make the manager look good. Despite losing Kevin Millwood to the Rangers, the Indians are off to a 6-1 start and poised to make a run at the AL Central title. Wedge actually could win the real award, but the Weekies don't discriminate against actual greatness. NL: Ned Yost The Brew Crew is coming back with a vengeance. Even without staff ace Ben Sheets, the Brewers are tied with Cincinnati atop the NL Central with a 5-2 mark. Yost could actually win the real award too now that I think about it. I'm going to stop thinking, starting........................20 minutes ago. There you have it. The Weekies. Check back to see how these gentlemen fare down the road. Who knows? They may even have a shot at The Monthies, and if they try hard, The Quarteries. Best of luck men!
