The Toronto Blue Jays signed catcher Bengie Molina to a one-year contract worth $4.5 million, with an option for 2007 worth $7.5 million on Monday.
Molina, 31, hit .295 for the Los Angeles Angels with 15 home runs and 69 RBIs in 119 games during the 2005 campaign.
The veteran catcher had spent his entire career in the Angels organization after signing as a free agent in May of1993. Molina has 65 career homers along with a batting average of .273 over eight years of Major League service.
Breaking Down The Deal
The Toronto Blue Jays have signed a marquee free agent?what else is new? Jays General Manager J.P. Ricciardi has added the final piece to the puzzle for the 2006 Toronto ballclub.
Bengie Molina is one of baseball?s finest two-way catchers. He has the ability to alter the thinking of baserunners with his strong and accurate throwing arm. Molina also possesses good power and calls a good game. The veteran catcher is known for his reliability behind the plate.
Molina will definitely be a nice upgrade for the Blue Jays. The Toronto pitching staff including Roy Halladay, AJ Burnett, Gustavo Chacin, and Ted Lilly will greatly benefit from having Molina behind the plate. I predict the catcher to hit around .280 with 10-15 homers for Toronto in 2006.
