It has been a roller coaster couple of days for Manny Ramirez and the Boston Red Sox.
First, it was reported that Manny requested a trade because of the lack of privacy he has in the city of Boston. Red Sox President Larry Lucchino later confirmed that Manny has asked for a trade each year since 2002.
Then Trot Nixon is injured Tuesday night and is placed on the disabled list the following day. Manny was told that he would have the day-off Wednesday but was asked if he could forgo the day-off because of the lack of outfielders. Manny said no and sat out the game to the ire of Red Sox fans.
On Friday night when the Red Sox returned to Fenway, Manny was booed in his first at-bat of the night. Manny then was pulled out of the lineup just minutes before Saturday night?s game.
Manager Terry Francona said after the game that it was in the best interest of Manny if he sat out and cleared his head. The Red Sox were working on a three team deal with the Mets and Devil Rays to move Manny to New York and acquire a couple of bats in order to make up for his production.
The roller coaster hit its peak on Sunday. While Francona was speaking with the media prior to the game, Manny and Kevin Millar barged into the manager?s office to clear the air.
"I'm just here to play and win. I'm a gangster," said Ramirez. "I'm still here. I'm here to win. I'm here to help this team win for 2005."
Francona thought the time off did Manny wonders.
"You see him. He looks OK," said Francona. "He looks like he's handling things he wasn't handling a couple days ago. I wasn't sure about that yesterday; that's why he didn't play. I wasn't sure he was in a position to help us."
Then Red Sox Nation forgave their favorite slugger in style. In the bottom of the eighth inning of a game tied at three, Manny was called upon to pinch hit with two runners on base. The crowd erupted with chants of ?Manny, Manny? as he strolled to the on deck circle.
Manny then hit a single up the middle to score Edgar Renteria with the winning run in a 4-3 victory over Minnesota. It rapped up the fifth consecutive victory for the Red Sox as they stay a couple of games ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East.
Manny has had a flare for the dramatics in his time with the Red Sox. In his first game at Fenway, Manny homered in a victory. In his first game against the Yankees, he hit a game-winning hit against Mariano Rivera. Not to mention all of the big hits in the playoffs last year to help win the World Series.
The Red Sox might trade Manny in the off-season if they are able to find a good match. They will need to find someone capable of putting up 40 homers and driving in 100 runs each year. There are not many players capable of putting up those numbers year in and year out.
But it was Manny?s day Sunday. He went from trade bait to hero in just 24 hours in the eyes of the Red Sox Nation. He is now a member of the Boston Red Sox for the rest of the season. And there will be one phrase used the rest of the season to sum up anything that Manny does.
It is just Manny being Manny.
