This time of year is dedicated to debating whether or not a particular player is good enough to play in the All-Star game. Baseball scribes will submit their All-Star ballot with reasons why a certain player is worthy and others are not. Fans will argue why their favorite player has been left off of the team, especially the host city.
But there is an even greater list of players that don?t deserve any sort of consideration for the game. These are players that the fans will vote for because they recognize the name on the ballot, not realizing that the player is either hurt or their career is taking a swan dive.
If you are voting at the ballpark or online in the next couple of days, here are some names to avoid on your ballot:
Catcher: Victor Martinez
Coming off of a career year, Martinez was the catcher of the future. This year, he has struggled at the plate. He is hitting just .239 with eight homers and 30 runs batted in. If he were on pace for last year?s totals, the Indians would be a lot closer to the White Sox for the division.
First Base: Jim Thome
Thome hit 89 dingers in his first two seasons in the city of Brotherly Love. This year, he looks washed up. He is struggling with just seven homers and 29 runs driven in. Andruw Jones hit more home runs in the past week than Thome has hit all year.
Second Base: Brett Boone
Boone has been trying to recapture the power stroke that he had from 2001-2003. He is now just another second baseman as he has hit only six long balls to date. If the allegations made in Jose Canseco?s book are truth, Boone is just another one-year wonder.
Shortstop: Nomar Garciaparra
In fairness to Garciaparra, he has been hurt the majority of the season. That fact has stopped the fans for voting for him to start for the NL. In the 14 games he did play, he wasn?t putting up All-Star numbers: .157 average with just four runs batted in.
Third Base: Mike Lowell
Lowell has been a major disappointment since signing a big contract with the Marlins last year. He does have a World Series ring to his credit but he not been the same player he was two years ago. This year, he is hitting .219 with just three homers and has driven in only 29 runs.
Left Field: Barry Bonds
Yes, Bonds has been injured all year but the fans continue to cast their vote for him. Bonds is a perennial All-Star and one of the greatest players of all-time. This year, he is not All-Star worthy.
Center Field: Bernie Williams
Williams has been a shell of his former self the past couple of years. He was a feared hitter in the Yankees championship seasons but it is too much of a coincidence that since Williams has struggled, so did the Yankees.
Right Field: Adam Dunn
Dunn is a very intimidating presence at the plate. But it is very simple, either he hit the ball a mile or he strikes out. He leads outfielders in strikeouts with 82. He has slugged 20 home runs but has just 39 runs batted in. So that means it is just usually him jogging around the bases.
Designated Hitter: Erubiel Durazo
It has to be the easiest job in baseball, designated hitter. All you have to practice is hitting and studying the opposing pitcher. But there are a number of everyday designated hitters that can?t just do that well. Durazo is hitting just .237 and driven in only 16 runs.
Pitcher: Eric Milton
Who better to anchor a staff than a pitcher with a 7.70 ERA and has yielded 27 homeruns thus far. Opposing teams are just hoping that Milton is taking the hill when they are playing the Reds this year. If so, they are guaranteed a big night at the plate.
Relief Pitcher: LaTroy Hawkins
If your team is trailing by a run and you notice Hawkins jogging in from the bullpen, you are in luck. With a 5.48 ERA in 26 appearances, you have a 50-50 chance of mounting a comeback (4 out of 8 in save chances) against him.
Bench: Jason Giambi
This might have been George Steinbrenner?s stupidest move of all of the stupid things he has done over the years. Giambi is making over $15 million a year and is now just a bench player for a mediocre team. He is hitting .256 with five homers and 22 runs batted in. Can we have a debate on who is now the better Giambi brother: Jason or Jeremi?
