After having to scramble to find a general manager in the wake of Theo Epstein?s resignation, the Red Sox promptly traded away prized free-agent pick-up from a year ago in Edgar Renteria. Now, centerfielder Johnny Damon is headed to the hated Yankees and a team that were the darlings of the baseball world in 2004 are now looking for answers in an every improving American League East. Even though the Red Sox made some screwed moves in picking up flame thrower Josh Beckett and an underrated second baseman in Mark Loretta. However, the Red Sox now have lost the ringleader of the famed ?Idiots? group that helped bond a team from diverse backgrounds in 2004 and created the now famous Red Sox Nation. Now, the Nation is in shock mode after the loss of Damon and the front office, which was credited for making the necessary moves to bring a championship to Boston, is now in total disarray. What the Red Sox need right now is a time-out for about a week and fix some key issues within the organization before they go any farther in the remaking of this team. First off, they need to do whatever they can to get Epstien back because he is the glue of this franchise. The way he and his staff evaluate talent and the way he interacts with the players makes him a very good general manager, especially for this environment. Next, they have to rebuild the core of the team to fit with both what management wants and what the city demands. The wild and crazy group worked in 2004 and might very well do so again. In the end it doesn?t matter, just as long as a core group is there. Come March and April, the Red Sox are going to contend for the playoffs and beyond because of the pure talent they already have on the roster. However, in Boston, it is all or nothing and to reach the mountain top again, they have to get back to their roots about what made them successful two years ago.
