We are nearing the dog days of summer and as NFL training camps begin to open this week, which teams will heat up heading into August and which ones will begin to fold? With the trading deadline now less than 10 days away, read on to see who are top 10 are this week. 1. Boston Red Sox (59-39) Starter Daisuke Matsuzaka has given up 25 hits in 24 July innings and has a 4.88 ERA for the month. 2. Detroit Tigers (58-38) Outfielder Gary Sheffield talks big and is playing big too with a .365 July average to go with a 1.128 OPS for the month. 3. Los Angeles Angels (57-40) Remember when starter Ervin Santana was too good to trade for A-Rod? He was sent down to the minors this week. 4. Cleveland Indians (58-40) Rumors of in-fighting within the clubhouse could derail another promising season for this young Indians squad. 5. New York Mets (55-43) As the Mets heat up, so does first baseman Carlos Delgado. In July, he is hitting .352 with four home runs and 10 RBI. 6. Los Angeles Dodgers (55-44) The Dodgers are a front-runner in the National League, but adding a bat and another starter will only add to their championship chances. 7. New York Yankees (51-46) How hot are the Yankees? They have won nine out of 12 games after the break and scored 38 runs in their last two games. 8. Milwaukee Brewers (55-43) They held Barry Bonds to no home runs over the weekend, but the bigger question is can they hold off the Cubs? 9. Seattle Mariners (54-41) With games at Texas and home against Oakland this week, it is time for the Mariners to cement their status as a contender before the Angels and Red Sox come to town. 10. Chicago Cubs (51-46) Starter Carlos Zambrano is 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA in July. In 25.1 innings of work, he has more strikeouts (25) than hits and walks combined (24). 11. Minnesota Twins (51-47) To make a run at the playoffs, the Twins need to add a power bat at all cost. They are 22nd in slugging percentage in all of baseball. 12. San Diego Padres (53-44) Outfielder Milton Bradley has performed very well in his first 11 games, but this line-up still has holes it needs to fill. 13. Arizona Diamondbacks (52-48) What the Diamondbacks do with starter Livan Hernandez (5-6, 4.77 ERA) will tell you if they think they are contenders. 14. Atlanta Braves (52-47) The once sturdy bullpen has begun to show cracks in recent weeks. Could this be a repeat effort of 2006? 15. Philadelphia Phillies (50-48) After winning the last three games in San Diego over the weekend, the Phillies now welcome in Pittsburgh and Washington. A big week here could put the Phillies squarely in this race to stay. 16. Toronto Blue Jays (48-50) In his last two starts, starter Roy Halladay has gone 16 innings and given up just one run. 17. Florida Marlins (48-51) Starter Dontrelle Willis is just 7-9 with a 5.13 ERA this season and has fallen out of favor in the Miami area. 18. Colorado Rockies (49-49) Outfielder Willy Tavares has been a nice addition by the Rockies, hitting over .300 and stealing over 20 bases this season. 19. St. Louis Cardinals (45-50) First baseman Albert Pujols is sizzling in July with a .391 average and a 1.228 OPS for the Cardinals, who are still fighting to get back into this race. 20. Baltimore Orioles (44-53) Outfielder Nick Markakis is having a solid second season at the major league level, hitting .291 and is on pace to better his home run and RBI numbers from a year ago. 21. Washington Nationals (42-56) After a rocky start, closer Chad Cordero hasn?t blown a save since June 23 and in that time; he has pitched 12 innings, given up one run and converted all seven of his save opportunities. 22. Kansas City Royals (43-54) Since Texas is hording their relievers, Kansas City is in great position to trade Octavio Dotel for an above market value price. 23. Houston Astros (42-56) They have lost six out of nine games and their next three opponents (San Diego, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta) all are playoff-caliber teams. 24. Cincinnati Reds (41-58) With all the talk of Griffey and Dunn being traded, don?t forget about closer David Weathers, who should be a hot commodity for his 2007 numbers thus far. 25. Chicago White Sox (43-54) For July, starter Mark Buehrle is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA and just four walks in 30 innings. There are more than a few contenders who are wishing the White sox didn?t lock him up. 26. Oakland A?s (46-52) After beating the Seattle Mariners on July 5, the A?s were 44-41. Since then, the A?s have lost 11 out of 13 games. 27. San Francisco Giants (41-55) Starter Barry Zito?s ERA has been progressively worst each month of the season. This is just one of the many reasons why the Giants are struggling. 28. Texas Rangers (42-56) Starter Brandon McCarthy (4-7, 5.53) has never found his form this year and has struggled under high expectations. 29. Pittsburgh Pirates (41-56) Pittsburgh fans have to pray their young pitchers turn this franchise around or the next rebuilding project could take place in another city. 30. Tampa Bay Devil Rays (38-60) Giving up 38 runs in two games is embarrassing as the Devil Rays lack of pitching is crippling the franchise. Think a team is underrated? Overrated?
