There is a suspected East Coast bias in the media and their coverage. With four teams in the top 10, the east is dominating this week?s rankings with a few highlights from the west coast.
1. (2) Atlanta Braves (12-6):
Outfielder Andruw Jones is off to a slow start, hitting only .222, but he looked better with five hits at New York last weekend.
2. (4) Boston Red Sox (12-5):
Starter Josh Beckett is dominant early with a 4-0 record and 25 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. Look out if he stays hot.
3. (1) New York Mets (11-6):
This just in: At .370 with 16 RBI and 10 steals in 17 games, shortstop Jose Reyes is now in the discussion for best player in the game.
4. (6) Los Angeles Dodgers (13-6):
The team?s 2.98 ERA is second best in all of baseball and a sign of how deep the pitching is in Los Angeles, where the impact of Jason Schmidt has been very disappointing.
5. (8) Minnesota Twins (11-7):
17 games behind the plate, a .393 average and a .997 OPS shows last year wasn?t a fluke for catcher Joe Mauer.
6. (19) Milwaukee Brewers (11-7):
No dominant hitter who can anchor the line-up everyday could be trouble as the season wears on for Milwaukee.
7. (7) Detroit Tigers (10-8):
Manager Jim Leyland made another one of his now famous speeches about his team. He can only hope this one works as well as last year?s version did.
8. (17) Baltimore Orioles (11-7):
Shortstop Miguel Tejada has fallen out of the national spotlight in lieu of Baltimore?s struggles, but he is starting his rise up as the Orioles win four in a row.
9. (18) San Diego Padres (11-8):
The bullpen has only given up 16 earned runs in 19 games of action. Better get to this team early if you want to win.
10. (21) Houston Astros (9-8):
First baseman Lance Berkman?s early struggles should concern Houston since they don?t have much room for error on offense.
11. (3) Cleveland Indians (8-7):
Pitcher C.C. Sabathia has battled durability issues for the past few years, but he looks to have turned a corner with his 3-0 start.
12. (27) San Francisco Giants (9-8):
Barry Zito has two straight wins, Matt Cain has a sub 2.00 ERA and the Giants have won five in a row. Watch out for the Giants.
13. (20) Chicago White Sox (9-8):
A no-hitter by Mark Buehrle should ignite this team as seen in their weekend series at Detroit.
14. (15) Oakland A?s (9-9):
The A?s have held on early through injuries and they will have to continue without starter Rich Harden and outfielder Milton Bradley.
15. (10) Los Angeles Angels (9-9):
The Angels are just 1-7 on the road and have six of their wins against the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. This might be a smoke-screen team.
16. (5) Arizona Diamondbacks (10-10):
The veteran starting pitching of Brandon Webb and Livan Hernandez have been below-par as they try to carry a young offense.
17. (12) Cincinnati Reds (9-10):
A team once known for big-time offense is only hitting .228, even though they play their home games in a known hitter?s park.
18. (13) St. Louis Cardinals (8-10):
Outfielder of the past, Jim Edmonds, is only hitting .212. Outfielder of the future, Chris Duncan, is hitting .323.
19. (16) New York Yankees (8-9):
Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is on an unbelievable tear right now, but a depleted pitching pool is making it useless.
20. (26) Pittsburgh Pirates (7-10):
First baseman Adam LaRoche is batting an embarrassing .105. Maybe they should have kept closer Mike Gonzalez.
21. (22) Texas Rangers (8-10):
The Rangers have been up and down under new manager Ron Washington, but they did take two of three from his old team, the Oakland A?s.
22. (14) Florida Marlins (8-10):
The Marlins were in the midst of a six game losing streak before taking the final two games against Washington.
23. (29) Philadelphia Phillies (6-11):
Manager Charlie Manuel went off in the media and then starter Cole Hamels struck out 15. Maybe Leyland has something with this April rants.
24. (9) Toronto Blue Jays (8-10):
They have lost five in a row and any early season momentum in the American League East.
25. (25) Chicago Cubs (7-11):
Centerfielder Felix Pie is a super prospect and could help their overall team defense once Alfonso Soriano comes back.
26. (24) Colorado Rockies (8-11):
First baseman Todd Helton?s swing is back as he is hitting over .300 and has 15 walks to just three strikeouts this season.
27. (23) Tampa Bay Devil Rays (7-11):
The Devil Rays like to run, as seen in their 16 steals, but being caught 14 times stunts too many big innings for the Devil Rays.
28. (11) Seattle Mariners (5-9):
They have lost six in a row and are in last place in the division. And now Felix Hernandez has landed on the DL. Not a good week for Seattle.
29. (28) Kansas City Royals (6-12):
Budding stars in shortstop Tony Pena Jr. and Alex Gordon are both hitting below .200 as the Royals start to come back down to earth.
30. (30) Washington Nationals (6-13):
They almost made it out of the 30th spot this week as third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is starting to show more signs of his rookie production.
