Buster ? Hello Mike, thanks for taking the time to sit down with me.
Scioscia ? The pleasure is all mine Buster.
Buster ? So we all saw the footage, a blown call by home plate umpire Doug Eddings opening up the 9th inning that lead to a 2-1 White Sox win. How could this have happened? Why you?
Scioscia ? Buster, I am going to let you in on a conspiracy that will be hard to believe. One that goes all the way to the very top of the MLB and beyond. Back in 1992 my voice was cast to do a special baseball episode of ?The Simpsons? entitled ?Homer At The Bat.? Along with Wade Boggs, Steve Sax, Ozzie Smith, Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey Jr., Jose Canseco, Don Mattingly and Daryl Strawberry, my character was commissioned to work in the Springfield Nuclear Powerplant for Mr. Burns while also playing as a ringer on the company softball team.
Buster ? I remember that episode quite well. Every player except Strawberry encountered some type of problem the day before the big game. I believe you got radiation poisoning correct?
Scioscia ? Exactly! Right on the button Buster. Well done, I give you credit for that. Well, I was advised against taking the roll by some very high-up officials from the MLB including a recently inducted Commissioner from the early 90?s. They did not want me to take the part as they felt that it was unfair to the nuclear industry to show me as sick and weak from radiation.
Buster ? Why should they care?
Scioscia ? That is what I thought. But after careful investigation I came across some information that was very surprising indeed. It turns out that Commissioner B. Selig, no, that is way to obvious, let?s call him Bud S. has a large amount of stock vested into America?s Nuclear Power industry. The fear was that my playing the roll of a powerplant employee who became sick from radiation poising would undermine the perceived safety of the industry and hence, decrease profits.
Buster ? I see, and now they are exacting their revenge upon you by paying umpires to call against your team.
Scioscia ? Obviously.
Buster ? What now Mike?
Scioscia ? I can only keep doing my job and avoid any more temptations to do cartoon cameo?s. This should be easy as the newer episodes of ?The Simpsons? suck.
Buster ? Yes?Yes they do.
