By Douglas Benton With so much player movement this winter, most fans will need to buy their team?s media guides just so they know who is on the team. However, a lot of moves doesn?t mean they were all great. Here are the 10 best moves thus far: 10- The Phillies-White Sox trade involving Aaron Rowland and Jim Thome was one of those rare trades that worked out very well for both teams. The White Sox were able to fill the power numbers lost by Frank Thomas and now have an above-average defensive first baseman to give Konerko a break in the field during the dog days of August. The Phillies were able to open up first base for phenom Ryan Howard to flourish for an entire season and fill the void in centerfield, which they have tried to do for at least the last five years. It was one of the first moves of the winter and it turned out to be one of the best. 9- While it wasn?t a definite need for the Dodgers, the signing of shortstop Rafael Furcal will most certainly help this team. The Dodgers were one of the worst offenses in baseball last season and they needed a guy like Furcal at the top of the order to jump start the attack. Granted, Cesar Izturis is one of the up and coming shortstops in the National League, the main objective for the Dodgers is to just acquire the best players they can. Also, Furcal will be even better defense to the team, which will need it with some shaky pitching. 8- Even though some experts said this wasn?t a mandatory after the Thome trade, it was essential for the White Sox to bring back Paul Konerko. He was the heart and soul for a team last season that went farther than they should have based on talent because of their collective hearts. Konerko had one of his best seasons and is showing no signs of slowing down. While there are other areas the White Sox need some help in, this should have been and was their number one priority this winter. 7- Over the last few years, the Braves have had to fix holes on the run and with a small budget. So when Furcal left for the Dodgers, everyone in baseball knew John Schuerholz would hit the ground running for his next shortstop. This player came in the package of Edgar Renteria, who is an all-star caliber shortstop. Yes, they did have to give up all-world prospect Andy Marte in return, but Renteria will make sure there is no drop off at this position and help out the offense of the rest of the young players continue to grow. 6- To compete against the Red Sox and Yankees, the Blue Jays knew they would have to spend money to entice the players necessary to compete. This winter, general manager J.P. Ricciardi finally had these financial resources and made a big gamble in going after A.J. Burnett. Burnett has always had the potential to be great, but injuries and a lack of consistency have been problems throughout his career. If he can finally get on the right path, the one-two punch of Halladay-Burnett will match anything the Red Sox or Yankees can offer. However, this is the big question for Ricciardi and could make the difference between GM of the year and unemployment. 5- The Twins have been on a slippery road downhill with their offensive attack. Now with the addition of second baseman Luis Castillo, fans are bound to see excitement at the top of the line-up every night. Also, he will make sure runners are on for Tori Hunter and Joe Mauer in the middle of the order. He will also improve the defense for a team that was already one of the best in the league. 4- If you hadn?t noticed from reading this list, White Sox general manager Kenny Williams had an outstanding offseason. He capped it off by stealing Javier Vazquez from Arizona and also adding more depth to a rotation that was historically good in the playoffs. Vazquez has always been known as one of the better pitchers in baseball, but his stock took a hit after one rough year with the Yankees. Now, he will be able to blossom in a more pressure-free environment. 3- After winning the World Series in 2004, the Red Sox lost much of their pitching firepower in Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe, and were left with an injured Curt Schilling. Now, they have the second ace once again with Josh Beckett, who they acquired from Florida during their fire sell. Beckett has a blister problem that stopped his career from taking off after his World Series performance at Yankee Stadium in 2003. Injuries are still a big question, but it is still a great pick-up for the Red Sox in what has been a tough offseason. 2- The feuding between the Red Sox and Yankees can become distracting at times, but it has been fueled one more time with the defection of Johnny Damon from Boston to New York. Damon?s negotiations were very public, which caused some hurt feelings on both parts. Either way, this is a great signing for the Yankees, who desperately need a good defensive centerfielder. His offense will help, but it is defense where he will pay the most dividends. Also taking him from the Red Sox will help lessen the field in the division. 1- The Mets might have won the division with a closer and now they have one of the game?s best in Billy Wagner. Wagner still is an intimidating left-hander on the mound and will provide a stable force at the end of the game that hasn?t been there since the hey days of John Franco. The Mets had some talent last year and Wagner will look to continue their growth next season.
