With only 10 days left in the regular season, we have a new RealGM #1 at the top of this weeks player rankings. The playoff races are tight, and players are performing at the highest level. It's going to be essential this week that baseball's top players rise to the occasion, especially if they're Indians, Red (or White) Sox, Yankees, Angels, Marlins, Phils Astros, or Athletics.
1. David Ortiz: Our new #1 had a tremendous week for the Red Sox (despite the team's 5-5 record). The AL's leading MVP candidate now has 46 HR's and 140 RBI's (now hitting .300). Will Boston return to the play-offs? Will their pitching staff step-up over the final 10 days?
2. Andruw Jones: No HR's and only 1 RBI this week for the NL's leading MVP candidate (50 HR's, 126 RBI's). His average has dropped to .267. Has he possibly opened the door for Pujols?
3. Alex Rodriguez: A-Rod had another productive week adding to his HR & RBI totals (45 HR, 120 RBI's). He is hitting .318 for the surging Yankees.
4. Albert Pujols: Pujols has raised his average to .337 and is closing in fast on the NL batting title. The Cardinal IB has 39 HR's & 109 RBI's. He's ready for the NL playoffs to begin.
5. Chris Carpenter: The NL's leading Cy Young candidate is now 21-4, with a 2.42 ERA, and 203 K's.
6. Bartolo Colon: The AL's leading Cy Young candidate is 20-7 for the AL West first place Angels (3.34 ERA).
7. Derek Lee: Lee has a 1-point lead in the NL batting race with 10 games to go. After leading the race for the majority of the season, Pujols is challenging him for the honor. Two more HR's this week give him 44 HR's for the season.
8. Dontrelle Willis: The D-Train will challenge Carpenter for league pitching honors. His record is 21-9, with an excellent 2.48 ERA.
9. Mariano Rivera: The Yankee closer is the best in baseball, with 3 more saves this week (41).
10. Miquel Cabrera: This top flight Marlin is hitting .321 and keeping Florida in the NL wildcard hunt.
11. Manny Ramirez: Four HR's and seven RBI's for Manny this week. The Boston LF now has 39 HR's and 129 RBI's.
12. Vladamir Guerrero: A productive week has raised his batting average to .320. Can he help lead the Halos to another AL West title?
13. Gary Sheffield: The Yankees DH has raised his average to .295, and will probably remain the DH for the duration of the season.
14. Randy Johnson: The Big Unit is now 15-8, with 201 K's. He'll have two huge starts during the final 10 days of the season.
15. Derek Jeter: The consistent Yankee SS is hitting .305 and is ready to shine this week.
16. Roger Clemens: One of the leading NL Cy Young candidates will be pitching in some key games for the Astros this week as they hunt for the October wildcard.
17. Michael Young: The Rangers stock continues to rise as he leads the AL in hitting with a .328 average and leads MLB with 207 hits.
18. Mark Teixeira: The powerful Ranger now has 41 HR's and a bundle of RBI's (132).
19. Pedro Martinez: No playoffs this year for Pedro, but his record of 15-7, 2.80, 207 K's, speaks volumes.
20. Johnny Damon: Is hitting .318 and has scored 107 runs for the Red Sox. Is he playing injured? Will he be playing in Boston in 2006?
21. Johan Santana: A record of 14-7 for this quality pitcher.
22. Chad Cordero: Only one chance for the Nationals closer this week (46).
23. Cliff Lee: A quality pitcher with an outstanding 17-4 record (3-0 in his last 4 starts).
24. Bob Wickman: One of MLB's Comeback Player of the Year candidates (44 saves to date).
25. Todd Helton: It's been another long season for the Rockies, but Helton can hit (.308).
Honorable Mention: Travis Hafner, Eric Chavez, Brady Clark, Carlos Delgado, Jimmy Rollins, Sean Casey, Joe Nathan, Mark Mulder, Richie Sexon, David Wright, Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, Ken Griffey, Jake Peavy, Chipper Jones, Andy Pettitte, Bobby Abreu, and Jon Garland.
