The Red Sox anticipated minor setbacks when they signed Wade Miller in the midst of a rehab program from rotator cuff problems, but it took three full months before the right-hander finally required his first extended rest. Miller, who surrendered five runs on 10 hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings in Monday's win over the Texas Rangers, was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday due to recurring shoulder stiffness. The move allowed the Sox to open a spot on the active roster for reliever Mike Remlinger, who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs. Due to the off day tomorrow, the Sox won't require the use of a starter in Miller's place until Tuesday but manager Terry Francona indicated it most likely wouldn't lead to Curt Schilling coming out of the bullpen. Miller, who spent the first month of the season on a minor league rehab program, started strong following his activation on May 8. He was 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in his first three starts but struggled maintaining consistency since then. Miller tossed seven shutout innings in a 3-0 win in Chicago July 23 but had a 7.84 ERA in his last two starts and surrendered nine earned runs on 16 hits and six walks in 10 1/3 innings. ``We're all on board that this is the right thing to do,'' Francona said. ``Rather than get one more start and back everything up, let's let him get stronger and get the stiffness out and have a chance to be Wade Miller.''
