The Chicago White Sox plan to place starting pitcher Orlando Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list on Monday because of tightness in his right shoulder. Chicago will recall right-hander Brandon McCarthy from Triple-A Charlotte to start on Monday against Kansas City, manager Ozzie Guillen said Sunday. Hernandez, 35, missed the 2003 season after having surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff. He is 7-2 with a 4.88 ERA in 11 starts in his first season with the White Sox but was on the disabled list to rest in May. In his last start, Hernandez allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 10-4 loss to Arizona on Tuesday. He had been scheduled to start against the Royals on Monday. Guillen said the White Sox are placing Hernandez on the DL, retroactive to June 15, to rest, not because of a new injury. "El Duque came today into my office and we had to run all over the place to try to figure out who's pitching tomorrow," Guillen said. "El Duque can't pitch tomorrow. He's going to be on the DL two weeks to feel real strong. "I want to make sure he's fine. When a player tells me two days before he's going to pitch 'I don't know yet,' we have to be real careful about it. We made the decision to shut him down and bring McCarthy up," he said.
