The Washington Nationals placed right-hander John Patterson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained forearm, a significant blow to their already-makeshift pitching staff.
Patterson, who has been dealing with the injury for nearly a month now and has not pitched since April 21, was put on the DL retroactive to April 22, making him eligible to return as soon as next week.
The Nationals, though, already have mapped out a rehabilitation schedule for Patterson, one that won't have him back pitching in the major leagues until May 13. The club plans to have him pitch in an extended spring training game in Florida on Wednesday, then at Class A Potomac on May 8.
Though Washington could "desperately use Patterson in its rotation, general manager Jim Bowden said it was more important to get the injury completely healed.
"Our responsibility is to take care of him for the long-term, not just today, tomorrow or the next day," Bowden said. "We need him for the long run, the next three, four, five years."

After months of delay and missed deadlines, Major League Baseball's senior leadership appears close to picking a new owner for the Nationals. With so much at stake, the impending decision has touched off a frenzy of gossip and rumors, which rose to a new level yesterday after a local television station reported that the deal was done.
The report completely overshadowed the game between Washington and Cincinnati at RFK Stadium that ended in a 5-0 Reds victory. "When I walked into the stadium there were a number of television cameras that greeted me," said Mark Tuohey, chairman of the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission. "I simply said that MLB had confirmed that no decision had been made. It's the buzz. It's the hot subject around town."

Alfonso Soriano had himself a ballgame on Friday night as he hit three home runs.
"Big home run. Big, big, big home run in the eighth inning," Nationals manager Frank Robinson said. "The other two were big, too."
It was Soriano's first three-homer game in the majors, and his five RBIs matched his best. He hit leadoff shots in the first and third innings off John Smoltz -- only the fifth player, and first since 1999, to get two homers in a game off the former NL Cy Young Award winner.
"I don't count the first one, because I just made a terrible pitch," Smoltz said. "After that, tip your hat, because that was a ball and he hit it out of the park."

Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden's attorney denied that Bowden and his girlfriend scuffled before the couple was arrested last weekend after he allegedly ran a stop sign.
A police report said Bowden and girlfriend Joy Browning -- who were in Florida for a series against the Marlins -- were arguing early Monday but assured police they were fine. About 10 minutes later, police said Bowden ran a stop sign.

Nationals vice president and general manager Jim Bowden was charged with driving under the influence Sunday night in Miami Beach.
Bowden was in Miami for the Nationals' three-game weekend series against the Florida Marlins.
Neither Bowden nor club president and CEO Tony Tavares were available for comment, but each issued a statement Tuesday through the ballclub.
"On Sunday evening in Miami Beach, Fla., I was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol," Bowden said in his statement. "I intend to plead not guilty at a future date in a Miami Dade court. I deeply regret any embarrassment that my arrest may cause the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball.
"On the advice of legal counsel, I will have no further comment regarding this incident until the court proceedings are complete."
