Porcello Primed For Breakout Season

Sep 13, 2014 6:25 PM

Rick Porcello has been a member of the Tigers for quite some time, but 2013 may be the season that he finally breaks out.

He set career highs in both strikeout rate and ground ball rate this past season, but even more encouragingly, his velocity jumped nearly two miles per hour.

Porcello struggled with poor luck in 2012, watching opponents hit .344 on balls in play. Detroit also featured a below-average defense, which didn't help.

Hunter's Strikeout Rate Should Scare Tigers

Oct 23, 2014 3:00 AM

The Tigers were thrilled to sign Torii Hunter early in the offseason, but there are statistics that indicate his resurgent 2012 effort may not leak into 2013.

Hunter produced a career-high 5.5 Wins Above Replacement last season in his age 36 season.

However, he struck out in 23 percent of his plate appearances last season -- a career-high.

He also had the lowest walk rate of his career (seven percent of PAs).
