Yordano Ventura Begins Suspension; Manny Machado Drops Appeal

Royals starting pitcher Yordano Ventura began serving an eight-game suspension Saturday and Orioles shortstop Manny Machado will begin a four-game suspension Sunday for their roles in an on-field fight during a June 7 game.

Ventura was initially handed a nine-game ban, but Major League Baseball reduced it to eight, beginning with Saturday's game against the Tigers.

Machado dropped his appeal Saturday, and his suspension will begin in the Orioles' series finale against the Blue Jays on Sunday.

Manny Machado's hearing to appeal his four-game suspension from last week's on-field fight with Yordano Ventura will be on Tuesday, according to a report.

Ventura hit Machado in the back with a 99 mph fastball in the fifth inning of the Baltimore Orioles' 9-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on June 8. Machado charged the mound and punched Ventura in the head as the benches emptied.

Ventura was given a nine-game ban.

Major League Baseball has suspended Yordano Ventura nine games for his role in Tuesday night's brawl between the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles.

Ventura, who threw at Manny Machado to kick off the fight, will appeal the suspension.

Machado received a four-game suspension. He has also appealed.

Marlon Byrd Suspended 162 Games For PED Use

Cleveland Indians outfielder Marlon Byrd has received a 162-game suspension without pay after testing positive for the growth hormone secretagogue Ipamorelin, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension of Byrd, who was previously suspended for a performance-enhancing substance violation on June 25, 2012, is effective immediately.
