Royals' Raul Mondesi Suspended 50 Games For PEDs

May 11, 2016 7:31 AM

Raul Mondesi was suspended 50 games without pay Tuesday as a result of a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance.

The Kansas City Royals infield prospect says the positive test was as a result of an over-the-counter cold medicine that he was taking.

Mondesi tested positive for Clenbuterol, which violates terms of Major League Baseball's joint drug prevention and treatment program. A positive test usually results in an 80-game suspension, but MLB and the MLBPA agreed to a reduced punishment after Mondesi showed the steroid came from Subrox-C, an over-the-counter medication that he bought in the Dominican Republic.

"It is by far one of the hardest moments I have had to face in my life, but it is a decision that I accept and one that I take full responsibility for as a professional," Mondesi said in a statement.

Chapman Says Foreign-Born Latin Player's Are 'Easy Targets'

May 9, 2016 1:10 AM

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman, who is serving a 30-game suspension under MLB's new domestic violence policy, suggested during a recent interview with The New York Times that foreign-born Latin players' unfamiliarity with American culture and newfound celebrity and wealth can make them easy targets for people who may try to take advantage of them.

"Unfortunately, that is the way it is," Chapman told the Times, which published its report on the interview Saturday. "We make a lot of money, everyone wants a piece of it, and we end up looking bad."

Chapman is set to rejoin the Yankees on Monday after being suspended for his alleged involvement in a domestic incident last October.
