MLB Suspends Baker, Girardi And Joyner

Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, today made the following discipline announcements: Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions, which included making contact with Umpire Eric Cooper, during the seventh inning of his Club?s game last night against the San Diego Padres at PETCO Park in San Diego. Baker?s suspension is scheduled to begin tonight, when the Reds continue their series against the Padres. New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions, which included kicking dirt on Umpire Chris Guccione, during the bottom of the ninth inning of his Club?s game last night against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium. Girardi is scheduled to serve his suspension tonight, when the Yankees host the Seattle Mariners. Padres hitting coach Wally Joyner has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for coming onto the playing field to argue during the bottom of the sixth inning of his Club?s Wednesday, May 21st game against the St. Louis Cardinals at PETCO Park in San Diego. Joyner is scheduled to serve his suspension tonight, when the Padres host the Reds.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that free agent Minor League player Aaron Jackson has received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a drug of abuse in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Jackson will be effective immediately upon his signing with a new Club. In 2007, Jackson pitched in the Washington Nationals organization for Single-A Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League.

Richie Sexson's six-game suspension for charging the mound last week has been reduced to five games after he filed an appeal to the league, according to The Seattle Times. "He wants to put it behind him," Mariners' Manager John McLaren said. "Just something that's been on his mind and stuff, and he just felt like it was better to go ahead and get this thing over with. And we're all aboard so let's go ahead and get it done." "I might stay back and just come in [to Safeco Field] and hit," Sexson said when asked what he can do over the course of the suspension.

Mariners' first baseman Richie Sexson has decided to appeal the six-game suspension the league handed down on Friday stemming from an on-field incident that took place on Thursday, according to The Seattle Times. Because of his plans to appeal the suspension, he failed to comment on the situation. Seattle Manager John McLaren did admit that the team plans to help Sexson through the process. "There were some things said last night that we are aware of that we can use in our defense," McLaren said. "We'll get with Richie so that when he does appeal he'll have some things that he can give Bob [Watson, the league's disciplinarian]."

Sexson?s suspension had been scheduled to begin tonight, when the Mariners host the Chicago White Sox. However, he has elected to file an appeal. Thus, the discipline issued to him will be held in abeyance until the process is complete. In addition, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners and Gerald Laird and Sidney Ponson of the Rangers have been fined undisclosed amounts for their actions during the incident.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Thursday that New York Yankees Minor League player Angel Reyes has received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for stanozolol metabolites, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Reyes will be effective at the start of the season for the Single-A Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League.
