Francona Out As Manager Of Red Sox

Jul 27, 2014 1:22 AM

The Red Sox have parted ways with Terry Francona. Francona helped lead the Red Sox to their first World Series since 1918 when they defeated the Cardinals in 2004. Boston won the World Series again in 2007. The Red Sox were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the season, culminating a September in which a sizable Wildcard lead over the Rays disappeared.

Yankees Leave Colon Off ALDS Roster

Jun 25, 2014 2:01 AM

The Yankees will carry an 11-man pitching staff in their ALDS against the Tigers. They have tabbed CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia as their only starting pitchers. Sabathia would pitch Game 4 on short rest, while Nova would take Game 5 on normal rest. The eight-man bullpen will also include starters A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes. Bartolo Colon is the odd man out. Jesus Montero will serve as the reserve designated hitter and catcher.

Chipper Reiterates Commitment To Play In 2012

Oct 21, 2014 6:55 PM

Chipper Jones has reiterated his desire to return to the Braves and Major League Baseball next season. Jones said Atlanta's September collapse would have no bearing on his decision. "I've committed to playing next year," he said. "I won't commit past that; let's put it that way. [But] I'm looking forward to it. As tough a pill as it is to swallow, for a lot of these young guys it's a learning experience. "We got our butts kicked for the last couple of weeks of the season, and they're going to learn a lot from it and be better ballplayers for it." Jones, 39, came back from season-ending knee surgery in August 2010 to hit .275 with 33 doubles, 18 homers and 70 RBIs in 126 games in 2011.

Kemp Won't Discuss Contract Once Season Begins

Sep 17, 2014 4:21 PM

Coming off an incredible offensive season, Matt Kemp is in line for a new contract with the Dodgers. The organization has never paid a player more than $105 million and they will need to shell out more money over the next six months or risk losing Kemp in free agency. "This is not going to be a cheap deal; you're talking about some pretty heavy dollars," said agent Dave Stewart. Kemp wants to remain with the Dodgers, but at his agent's request he will not discuss a deal once the 2012 season begins. "I know it is not a good thing to negotiate a contract during the course of the year; it's just not," Stewart said. "The player needs to be clear of mind and just do his job, and the organization also doesn't need the distraction." If Kemp doesn't sign a new deal before the 2012 season, Stewart will also suggest that he entertain offers from elsewhere next winter.

Arizona's Baylor Hospitalized After Fainting

Sep 22, 2014 2:55 PM

Diamondbacks batting coach Don Baylor was taken to a hospital after fainting at Miller Park on Friday morning. Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said Baylor had a "fainting episode" after eating breakfast in the clubhouse, and one of the team's trainers caught him as he fell. "Anytime somebody faints, loses consciousness for a while, it's scary," Towers said. "He's a big part of this ballclub, means a lot to these players. And hopefully everything turns out well and he's in uniform tomorrow, hopefully helping us win a ballgame against a very good Brewers club."
