The 27-year-old set career highs in batting average (.268), home runs (25) and RBIs (96) last season.

Seager was eligible for salary arbitration and would have been eligible for free agency after the 2017 season. He made $540,000 last season.

The Seattle Mariners are looking to add a right-handed bat and are expected to inquire with the Atlanta Braves about Justin Upton or Evan Gattis, if they haven't already.

There may be a possible trade match between Seattle and Atlanta.

The Seattle Mariners were among the finalists to sign Russell Martin, who eventually agreed to a five-year, $82 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Seattle has a catcher in 23-year-old Mike Zunino, but they are looking for right-handed hitting and Zunino just finished his first full Major League season.

Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right small toe when he was hit in the foot with a pitch during baseball's Japan All-Star Series, the Mariners announced Saturday.

The injury will not require a cast or treatment, but Cano will have to refrain from baseball activities for 3-4 weeks while the fracture heals, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said in a statement.

Felix Hernandez vows to work harder after finishing second in the voting for the American League Cy Young to Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians.

"I don't know what to say. That was tough," Hernandez said. "A little disappointed. Just give me more motivation to work harder and harder and be better next year."

The Seattle Mariners right-hander finished just 10 points behind Kluber.

Hernandez went 15-6 with an AL-leading 2.14 ERA and 248 strikeouts in 236 innings.

"I had a great year," Hernandez said. "Health, I feel fine the whole year. ... I think I pitched way better than 2010."

At least 10 different teams have reached out to express interest in Torii Hunter's services.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Royals, Twins, Tigers, Cubs, Giants, Rangers and Mariners have all shown some early interest in the veteran outfielder.

Hunter will turn 40 in July.

The Seattle Mariners are expected to shop Michael Saunders at next week's general manangers meetings.

Saunders and the Seattle organization have had a falling out based on comments made by Jack Zduriencik at the end of the season.
