John Lackey believes he was misled about the severity of his elbow issues by the Red Sox medical staff.
Boston disputes the claim.
According to a Major League source, Theo Epstein encouraged Lackey to have surgery in 2011 because he felt Lackey's subpar performance was directly related to his elbow issues.
Lackey kept pitching and finally had the surgery done last year.
