The Yankees plan to get their payroll below the $189 million luxury-tax threshold in 2014, a decision that will restrict baseball's biggest spender.
New York is intent on reaping the financial benefits of getting under the threshold, but they also plan to keep Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson, both of whom are signed through 2013.
Because of that, the Yankees will will pass on free-agent outfielder Josh Hamilton and left-hander Cole Hamels this offseason.
