Phil Hughes was disappointed with his 2011 season and didn't need to be told by Joe Girardi that his physical conditioning needed to improve. "For me, last year was a failure and I didn't want to do that again," the right-hander said, "so I made sure I had no excuses coming into spring. I was ready to go. I was strong. It's all on me. At the end of the day, I have to want it." Hughes reached 93 mph with his fastball Tuesday in his first outing of spring training. He allowed two runs on four hits against Pittsburgh. The Yankees haven't guaranteed a spot in the rotation to anyone but CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda. "I don't think there necessarily was a message sent in my direction. I did my offseason program on my own. I called the team and made sure it was OK that I did that," Hughes said. "It wasn't something where I was being punished and sent to boot camp somewhere. It was something I wanted to do."
