The Red Sox may end up becoming bigger players on the free agent market than initially expected because of the rule changes agreed to under the new collective bargaining agreement. The new deal includes the revamping of compensation for some Type-A free agents this winter, in advance of an entirely new system being set in place next year. Because of the reclassification, Boston could sign big-name relievers Heath Bell, Ryan Madson and Francisco Rodriguez without having to surrender a first-round pick as compensation.
