Former major league outfielder Matty Alou died on Thursday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, at the age of 72. "My Uncle Matty was very ill, had several complications," his nephew, Jesus Alou Jr., said. Jesus Alou Jr. said his uncle had a pacemaker inserted three weeks ago in Miami. Matty Alou played 15 seasons with the Giants, Pirates, Cardinals, Athletics, Yankees and Padres. He had a career average of .307 and won the National League batting title in 1966 with a .342 average.
