Once again, Yankees manager Joe Girardi believes that the team's top priority this winter will be starting pitching. Before winning the World Series in 2009, New York signed starters CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. Sabathia can opt-out of his contract and hit the free agent market and contributors Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon are not under contract for 2012. "The one need we are going to have to address again is our rotation," Girardi said. "There is no doubt about it. We have two guys who are free agents. We have another guy who can opt out. It is similar to what we had to do for this year. It all starts with CC and then you go from there." Girardi added that the Yankees consider Phil Hughes to be a starter.
