Derek Jeter moved within two hits of 3,000 with a line-drive double to lead off the bottom of the first inning on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, according to an ESPN.com report.
Jeter nailed the first pitch he saw from Rays starter Jeff Niemann into the gap. Center fielder B.J. Upton fielded the ball, but Jeter beat the throw to second.
Jeter grounded out to third to end the second inning in his second at-bat.
