Twins first baseman Justin Morneau admitted to RealGM on Monday afternoon that the team was aware they would miss Johan Santana after trading him to the Mets this winter. "Obviously we knew we were going to miss Santana, he?s one of the best pitchers in the game," Morneau said hours before winning the 2008 Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium. Despite losing Santana, Morneau is still happy that he signed a long-term deal with the Twins and appears excited about the team's future. "I knew I wanted to be in Minnesota. I knew we had a lot of young talent," he added. "With trading Santana, we got a player like Carlos Gomez that has been pretty exciting for us in the first half. He?s got a chance to be really good." He also shared his favorite moment at Yankee Stadium, remembering what it was like to play in New York during the 2004 postseason. "The playoffs in 2004 when we were here. I ended up getting a hit off of Mariano [Rivera] late in the game, getting pinch-run for and [Corey] Koskie hit a ground-rule double and that?s definitely something I?ll never forget," Morneau recalled.
