Return to MLB Prospect index Angel Villalona - 1B Angel Villalona Scouting Report - Villalona was signed to a $2.1 million signing bonus by the Giants in August of 2006 at the end of a bidding war involving the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Mariners. - Born August 13th, 1990 in the Dominican Republic. - Has a very big 6'3", 240+ frame and should be one of the game's best right-handed sluggers. - He initially was projected as a third baseman but has moved to first base and has made a successful transition. - Villalona hit .263/.312/.435 (.712 OPS) as a 17-year-old in Single-A ball for the August GreenJackets during the 2008 season. Even though he hit 17 homers in 464 at bats, Villalona struck out 118 times while walking just 18. His strikeout rated decreased over the final two months of the season and that coincided with a bump in his BAbip - He has tremendous bat speed and has been improving on staying back, particularly against offspeed pitches. - Villalona first popped up on the Giants radar when Rick Ragazzo watched him hit at age 13. - Played in the 2008 Futures Game at Yankee Stadium.
