Manny Ramirez will undoubtedly clear procedural waivers in the upcoming days, but there is virtually no shot the Red Sox will be able to resurrect trade talks with the New York Mets and Tampa Bay. No team will put a claim in on Ramirez for fear of being stuck with the $57 million remaining on his albatross contract after this season, which would clear him for an August trade, but nearly all of the other components of last weekend's complicated deal have no chance of clearing waivers. ``It's not going to happen,'' one GM who was not involved in last week's talks said. ``(Lastings) Milledge, (Aubrey) Huff and (Danys) Baez aren't going to get past me, if they make it that far.'' Any hope that the Sox might be able to expand or redirect their efforts in a bid to acquire Cincinnati slugger Adam Dunn appear to have passed. Even though the Reds entertained offers earlier in the season, they appear determined to hold onto Dunn now, even though his 2006 salary could approach $10 million in arbitration. According to sources, the San Francisco Giants have unexpectedly blocked several possible deals by putting in an abundance of waiver claims. The Washington Nationals have also been very active on the waiver wire. Players on 40-man rosters can only be traded in August if they clear waivers. The vast majority of players in the majors will appear on the waiver wire this month but teams are permitted to pull them back if a claim is made, work out a deal with the team that does the claiming or allowing the claiming team to have the player.
