The New York Yankees will begin the season with Luis Gil as their No. 5 starter, Aaron Boone has confirmed.

Gil will essentially step into the role vacated by Gerrit Cole, who will be sidelined until at least late May with nerve inflammation in his elbow

"I'm really happy about it," Gil said. "Coming into camp, I mentioned how hard I worked in the offseason to put myself in a really good situation. To me, it was important to have a good start. It's exciting. I'm very fortunate and happy to have this opportunity."

This will be Gil's first full season back from Tommy John surgery.
