The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed Gerrit Cole on the 60-day disabled list, effectively ending his 2016 season.

Cole returned to the mound on Monday after missing three weeks. He allowed five runs on four hits and four walks in just two innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Pirates announced his injury as right elbow posterior inflammation.

"I'm disappointed. There's just not enough time to recover," Cole said. "I'm disappointed I'm not out there to help the team. That's the one thing I've been fighting for all season, to try to be able to contribute to our ultimate goal. It's unfortunate we ran out of time."
