The Miami Marlins are not optimistic about signing Jose Fernandez to a long-term contract, according to a report.

Fernandez, 23, is expected to seek $30 million annually in free agency. Stephen Strasburg signed a seven-year, $175 million deal with the Washington Nationals in May, six months before free agency.

The right-hander is scheduled to become a free agent in 2019.
