Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig wanted to see Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols on the National League All-Star roster.
"It shows you the commissioner doesn't always get what he wants," Selig said.
Once it became apparent that Pujols, who had not been named to the All-Star team initially, had recovered well ahead of time from a fractured left wrist and wanted to come to the All-Star Game, Selig admitted, "I called a number of people and said, 'Boy, would I love to see Albert here' I wish he were here. But it was tough at that point. I knew they had a lot of first basemen."
National League manager Bruce Bochy, who made the call to add Arizona's Miguel Montero as a third catcher, rather than perhaps Pujols, said in his office before Tuesday's game that he didn't know until Saturday night that Pujols had wanted to come.
