Gary Sheffield could make a surprising return to the Mets before the season is over. "I would say he's pretty close to being out," manager Jerry Manuel said last Sunday. However, Sheffield's ailing back has reportedly improved. He hasn't played since Aug. 28, but resumed batting practice on Thursday. Sheffield will be a free agent this winter.
